⚠  Mandatory deadline: all existing staff must complete Geccko foundation training by 27 August 2026.  remaining.
From 27 February 2026, all staff, volunteers and students in early childhood education and care services regulated under the National Quality Framework must complete mandatory national child safety training. This is required under section 162B of the Education and Care Services National Law. The training consists of two foundation courses available through Geccko, the Australian Government's free online learning platform for the early childhood sector.
Everyone involved in providing education and care at an NQF service must complete the training, even if they do not work directly with children. This includes nominated supervisors, educators and educator assistants, FDC educators, admin and office staff, cooks and kitchen staff, volunteers including students on placement, and any person with management or control of the service. If there is any doubt, assume the person needs to be trained and tracked.
27 August 2026 is the deadline for all existing staff to complete foundation training. For new staff starting from 14 August 2026, they must complete foundation training within 14 days of starting or before working directly with children, whichever is earlier. Ongoing, training must be renewed every two years.
The foundation training has two courses. Course 1, Understanding Child Safety, covers child safe culture, children's rights, values and beliefs in practice, diversity and inclusivity, and child development. Course 2, Understanding and Identifying Child Abuse and Neglect, covers recognising abuse and neglect, grooming behaviours, professional boundaries, and mandatory reporting obligations. The advanced module, expected from July 2026, covers putting child safety into practice.
Yes, completely free. The Geccko training is provided by the Australian Government at no cost to services or staff. GecckoProof is a separate compliance management tool that helps directors track and prove who has completed the training. GecckoProof is not the training itself.
Advanced training is expected from July 2026. It will be required for nominated supervisors, persons in day-to-day charge, persons with management or control, and staff working directly with children. Once released, existing relevant staff will have six months to complete it. New staff must complete it within three months of starting. GecckoProof already includes Advanced training tracking and will add it to your dashboard when the modules launch, at no extra cost.
No, and it is important to be clear. The mandatory training must be completed through Geccko at learning.education.gov.au. Nothing replaces it. GecckoProof is the management layer that sits on top. Staff complete training in Geccko, download their certificate, and upload it to GecckoProof. You then have a central record of every person's completion status that you can show a regulator.
Geccko is good training software. It has no management view. Every staff member logs in with their own personal email. As the approved provider, you cannot see who has completed training, when they did it, or generate any kind of report. When a regulator asks for evidence that your team has completed mandatory training, Geccko gives you nothing to show them. GecckoProof solves that specific problem.
